Oral Commentary Essay

â€Å"hello, this is jakob gonzalez. Today i will comment on Two Minue Drill by Mike Lupica. my focua will be to analyze the way the universal theme of dreaming represents Mike Lupica’s view of life as nobody is perfect.The view of life is established by Mike Lupica’s effective use of conflict resoltion, and character development. Pior to my analysis i will provide you an overview of my text. I will now summarize the main literary features of the novel Two Minute Drill. The setting of Two Minute Drill is around fall and one of the main settings would be perry’s field because that’s where scott hangs out with chris and that’s where he really gets him emotions out and doesn’t really focuson anything and th have a great tme with his dog Casey and Chris. The protagonist of Two Minute Drill is scott perry. Scott perry may be charcterized by the following two traits, shy and self conscious. the antagonist Jimmy Dolan may be characterized by the following two traits, selfish and greedy. The major internal conflict is Scott wants to get better at football and Chris wants toget better at math, and language arts. so they agree on a deal to help each other. The major external conflict is chris gets hurt in the championship game and scott has to get the final points to win. The main events of this novel are in the beginning Scott was the new kid and kept on getting bullied by Jimmy and after chris came in and told Jimmy to stop. A couple of weeks later chris saw how good scott was a kicker and wanted to tell everyone but scott was trying hold him back. Also chris finally told scott about how he cant read and totally freaked scott out about it. Finally the last major event would be when scott had to kick a field goal to win he game for the championship on the line and it was actually his first time on the field playing. the climax of Two Minute Drill is when chris finally told scott that he couldn’t read. The novel concludes with the following major event when they are at the championship game. The internal conflict is resolved when Scott got to get on the field and win the game for his team and chris passed his test and was able to play football. The external conflict is resolved when Scott got his chance to finally et on the field and prove to everyone that they were wrong about him not being a good football player. The resolution of these conflicts and the development of the protagonist over time establish the theme of never giving up. I will now comment on how Mike Lupica utilizes conflict, and resolution to establish a controlling impression and theme. Understanding the author’s craft in creating resolution to major conflicts in a novel crystallize the reader’s inference of theme.In Two Minute Drill there exist the following theme. The internal conflict is scott wants to get better at football and chris wants to get better at math an language arts so they agree to a deal to help each other out is illustrated in the following quote from the novel, â€Å"The deal is, you make me better at football, and i’ll make you better at school.†(78) This conflict occurs further in the novel, â€Å"Chris stared at the grade on the front, not changig expression until Mr.Dykes was past him. then chris looked back at scott and pointed at him. chris finally seen his grade, B.†(98). This internal conflict conflict is resolved when scoot helped out chris with his school work and passed Mr.Dykes test so he could play the championship game and chris helped scott with football and making tougher and he got his chance to kick the ball in the championship game. The following quote provides evidence of the authors resolution,† chris smiled with a cocy quaterback smiled, i told i’d get you better at football†.(180) and scott said â€Å"i told you i’d get you better at school†.(180) Mike Lupica crafted a resolution in which the protagonist scott learns that as long as youstick to something and get better at it something good will happen later.such a resolution allows the reader to understand the authors view of never giving up because scott knew that even though he didnt like playing football that the year with jimmy that he knew if he could get through the year maybe the coach will put him in the game to kick. The external conflict is chris getting hurtin the championship game, and scott having to get to the final points to win the game is illustrated in the following quote from the novel, â€Å"Mr.Dolan took off his cap despite the soaking rain, and rubbed his forehead.scott thought the coach looked lost for a moment. then suddenly coach called me out on to the field.(170)†. this conflict occurs further in the novel,†scott planted his left foot, not slipping even a little bit, dropped the ball perfectly in the spot he cleared.brought his right leg through. it cleared the cross bar with a couple of feet to spare(177)†. The external conflict is resloved when scott kicked the ball through the croosbar to win the game for his teammates. The following quote provides evidence of the authors resolution â€Å"i’m going to say this for the last, time, and i promised i wont say it again. i couldn’t do it without you(180)†. Mike Lupica crafted a resolution in whichthe protagonist scott learns that hint at character development and a furthering of the plot. such as a resolution allows the reader to understand the author’s view of never giving up because people will always make you doubt yourself and tell you what you want to achieve is impossible but doesn’t matter what other people think, its about how you can prove them wrong and tell them not everything is possible. Mike Lupica’s resolution to the stated conflict is but one aspect of understanding theme. a reader must recongnize and interpret character development over time to dive deeper into the author’s purpose in communication a view of life. The theme of never giving up is in part established by the characters actions,thoughts, and words and in their reactions to their repective conflicts. An analysis of the characters behavior allows the changes in the protagonist’s character hint to the author’s statement on life. the protagonist is best characterized by the following traits sy and self consious. For example , the trait of shy is evidence when † so he tried to not act like he was showing off, even though his hand still shot up more than anybody else’s in sixth grade(2).†This shows that the character posses the trait of shy because heknew that if he liftd his hand all the time then people would call him the nerd s he tried to not be so involved in the class so that no one knew who he is. In addition the trait of self conscious is evidence when â€Å"oh i get your one of those guys who doesn’t think kickers are real players(32). â€Å"This shows that the character posses the trait of self conscious because scott began to go into a shell and try to protect himself because he knew that chris was going to tell everyone about how he could kick the football.these triats, in part determine how the character will resolve his conflict. Internal conflict of scott wanting to get better at footballand chris wanting to get better at math and language arts so they agree to a deal to help each other outis resolved when scott takes te following action by tutoring chris at his house and then go in the backyard and chris would help scott become a better football player so he coulld kick a field goal in the game. The external conflict of scott wanting to get on the field and play is resolved when chris takes the following action to tell Mr.Dolan to put scott in because he knew that he could win the game for them.The conflict is resolved because he gets to kick the winning field goal for his teammates. The author’s ability to craft a protagonist’s development through conflict is an important aspect in a readers understaning of the main character. A reader wishes to know how thier character will handle adverse situations, and how they will be affected by their reaction to the situation.This is a quality that engages a reader and forwards the plot development. when a reader assasses the manner in which a character resolves his conflict through actions, thoughts, or words theme is evident As i have commented on my reading of Two Minute Drill by Mike Lupica. i have discussed the theme of never giving up and how this theme is understood through the analysis of scott handling oof his internal conflict and finally gettinhis opportunity to show everyone wrong and the external conflict on how scott got to kick the winning field goal and won the championship titl for his team thus learning the lesson of you dont want to be the person that is weak and gives up. As long as you keep on practicing something good will happen in return. my analysis of these aspects of my independent reading novel allows me to infer the theme of never giving up. Explain how Blacks disagreed amongst themselves in the 1960’s about the best way to try to gain more civil rights

Although people had been campaigning for equal rights for a long time, it wasn't until the mid 1950's that the civil rights movement began to gain popularity and support. Rosa Parks was a 42-year-old black protestor who had organised a kind of experiment on the 1st December in Montgomery, Alabama. Rosa Parks was on her way home from work on the bus. When the bus became full, she was asked to give up her seat, for a white man, and to stand up at the rear of the bus, as the law stated. Rosa refused to move. She was arrested and fined $10. After this, the black civil rights campaigners and her family and friends organised a 24 bus boycott, which was so successful they decided to carry on boycotting the bus companies until they agreed to seat all passengers on a ‘first-come' basis. Since 75% of the bus' business came from black passengers, the buses eventually gave in, but not without resistance. The victory over the bus companies was mainly due to a campaign with the slogan â€Å"Don't ride it for freedom†. It was this protest that saw the emergence of one of the most influential figures in the black civil rights campaign, Martin Luther King. He helped to lead this campaign. Dr Martin Luther King was a black minister who believed that mass non-violent protest was the best way to resist injustice. He took examples of direct action from Mahatma Gandhi, who fought against the British troops in India using, what he called â€Å"non-violent non-co-operation† campaigns. King was a pacifist, so did not believe that violence was the right way to get what they wanted but he knew that going through the courts to change the law would also not have been very successful, as all the people involved in the legal system and courts were usually white and some were members of the KKK. In 1957, he formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) with other clergy from Southern States to fight against racial segregation. They organised non-violent protests such as sit-ins, Freedom rides and marches. In 1960, four black students asked to be served at a Woolworths lunch counter in Greensboro, reserved for white customers only. The black waitress refused to serve them so they staged a sit-in demonstration. Two days later, 85 civil rights campaigners staged another sit-in protest. 70,000 people in the next 18 months took part in similar sit-ins across the South. During these sit-ins, people poured drinks and sauces over them and even sprayed them with paint. 3,000 civil rights workers were arrested. All this attracted the media and drew attention other injustices endured by black people. The freedom rides tool place on interstate travel buses. The Supreme Court had ordered that these and the waiting stations for the buses should be desegregated in 1960. In 1961, CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) decided to put these ignored laws to the test. Thy found that although the coaches were desegregated, the services in the bus stations were not. They organised a group of civil rights campaigners to travel on the buses and, at the stations, use opposite facilities to those they were supposed to (black campaigners used the white facilities and white campaigners used the black facilities, including toilets and waiting areas. ). Many freedom rides were organised to try and force the coach companies to abide by the law and desegregate their stations. Unfortunately, anti civil rights, such as the KKK, got involved and violence broke out at many of the freedom rides. Bombs were even planted on some of the buses. One example of a protest that ended with violence took place in Birmingham, Alabama in May 1963. Alabama had the highest amount of members in the KKK and the Governor and police department were both against desegregation. Martin Luther King was arrested before the demonstration began. When the demonstration starts, it is led by children. Bill Connor, head of the police department, arrested protestors, including the children, some of them as young as six. On the second day, the police used fire hoses, horses and dogs to attack the protestors, again, including the young children at the front of the demonstration. After that, Martin Luther King began to doubt whether or not the demonstration was a good idea because of the violence created. Soon, a deal was struck with the state authorities that all the public facilities would be desegregated within 90 days if the protestors called off the demonstration. Again, this caused a backlash from the KKK, who started riots fires and bombings. The demonstration got a lot of attention from the national media and pictures of young children being mauled by dogs set on them by the police caused outrage in the rest of America. But King knew that the police and public would use violence against demonstrators and that this would attract the media. He also knew that it would attract more attention if the children were at the front of the demonstration and therefore the first to be caught up in the violence. This caused some followers to doubt Martin Luther King's methods. Others began to think that the non-violent protesting was not getting them very far. In the mid 60's, the civil rights movement began to split. Different groups began to gain popularity. The emergence of the Black Power movement began, which were groups who were against working with white people and expelled white people from their campaigner groups. They encouraged blacks to set up their own business so they depended on white people as little as possible. Only the NAACP and SCLC continued to support the ideas of non-violent direct action and co-operation with whites. One of the groups associated with ‘Black Power' was the Nation of Islam, or Black Muslims. Their most well known leader was Malcolm X. He, with the Nation of Islam, believed that getting racial equality in white society was impossible because whites were racist and would never change. They campaigned for a black state inside the US that would be ruled by black people, for black people, without white people. They also rejected the civil rights movement, as they didn't want to have any part in white society and believed that Blacks should use violence to protect themselves, if necessary. But even the Nation of Islam had disagreements among its members about the best way to get what they wanted. In 1964, Malcolm X began to change his mind about the civil rights movement and began to accept that white people could play a useful role in helping black people achieve justice. The Nation of Islam split and Malcolm X led a breakaway group. In 1965, he was assassinated by 3 members of the Nation of Islam. In 1975, the leader of the Nation of Islam died and his son changed the policy on the organisation on accepting white Muslims as members. This caused another split in the Nation of Islam. Another group associated with ‘Black Power' were the Black Panthers. They were quite a small group but attracted a lot of attention because of the way they looked their revolutionary ideas and their use of armed violence. They had the most violent reputation and used armed patrols in the black areas to protect black communities from ‘police terrorism'. Although the blacks may have disagreed with policies to gain civil rights, most would recognise the effects of Martin Luther king as the most powerful influence over civil rights.

1. Cadillac introduced it’s new luxury SUV that is called the Escalade, and they had no idea in what direction it would lead to. To their surprise, it becomes a instant classic and the most popular truck on the market. They weren’t set out to target a specific customer base, they just wanted to keep up with the SUV craze. They saw other companies putting out similar vehicles, so they wanted to dip into that market. Once it released, it seemed to become a staple in the hip hop community, sports world, and for regular customers looking for a luxury SUV. It became most prominent however in the hip hop and sports cultures. You see tons of athletes arriving to the games in their escalades, and a lot of hip hop artists have them featured in their music videos. For some reason, it just excelled in the market, and there is really no particular reason for it. It could be because of how unique it looks, the luxurious features, or just off the time it was released. The music and sports industry started to boom so there was a lot of money to be spent and the Escalade was the newest and hottest item on the street. 2. The Escalade became so popular I believe for the power it represents. I feel that if you own a Escalade, you have a sense of power in a way. Whether it shows that you have money, a sense of style, or anything else, it just brings off a certain type of vibe. It shows some type of boldness as well, because you think of personality when you think of an Escalade. When you look at one, you notice first how the shiny grill stands out and just how luxurious the car is. I think in a way Cadillac has extended its appeal because now a lot of the Cadillacs feature the shiny grill. You also see its influence on other vehicles, because a lot of competitors base their models off of it and try to make some similarities. 3. Other companies have a lot to learn from the Escalade. If they do it right, maybe they can become the leader in luxury SUVs. It’s all about whom you have to endorse your product and how you market it out to the public. Cadillac know it has many endorsers that are famous and widely known throughout the world. When you have people of that magnitude openly using your products, you gain a tremendous amount of recognition. Also, before you come up with a new concept or design, you should allow potential customers to see the product to see if it would be something they would like. If you market your product correctly, there is a good chance that it will be successful just like the Cadillac Escalade. Case Study Cadillac is one of the most popular vehicle brands in the United States to this date. As Americans, we tend to treat it differently because it is the luxury brand of our Country. Since it is an American made car, we take a sense of pride in it, and owning one is something special. In 1998 there started to be a craze for mid size SUVs, and just like every other vehicle company, Cadillac had some thoughts in mind. They released their brand new line of the Cadillac Escalade, a large luxurious SUV. When they originally released it, they felt that their market would be traditional customers, but boy, where they wrong. In fact, it was the complete opposite. The Escalade seemed to become nationally recognized when it was constantly featured in hip hop videos, commercials, and the sports industry. While Cadillac didn’t intend to get into those specific markets, I’m sure they aren’t complaining because of how much recognition it gave them. However, it does seem to brush off a certain bad image when you see it featured in some of those ways. When you see a Escalade in a hip hop video that has drugs, half naked women, and curse words, it may rub some of your other customers off. It can be seen as a gang car, and you certainly don’t want to be driving one of those in certain areas. A regular family can be in the market for a SUV, but they may get a negative vibe from the Escalade because it may come off as being too â€Å"hood† or â€Å"ghetto† for them. I’m not too sure how a car can gain that characteristic, but I understand by it being featured and abused in certain ways, it can portray a negative image. Cadillac can feature their products in certain ways, and be able to be seen as a positive vehicle that is made for everybody. They can limit their exposure in hip hop videos if they feel that is necessary. When you see certain commercials you notice that the brand symbol is blurred out. If Cadillac saw this as a dilemma, they can gain access to have their emblems blurred out in rap videos that feature bad behavior. They can still gain national recognition by more of a formal type of commercial. This way, you do not offend any particular race, and show that the vehicle is suitable for people of all ages, color, and race. Cadillac has become on of the mot powerful and influential car brand, that I feel they don’t need to do too much to market themselves. They already have a tremendously large market.

‘Never Let Me Go’ and ‘My Sisters Keeper’ Essay Both ‘Never Let Me Go’ by Kazuo Ishiguro and ‘My Sisters Keeper’ by Jodi Picoult explore issues that are widely discussed but rarely put into practice. There are several points throughout the novel where Kathy looks through magazines to try and find her original. She continues to question her past and her childhood and as she explores her history, readers are able to have a clear understanding of who Kathy is and why she has found it difficult to discover an identity. The Authors explore the moral question of how scientific and medical advances are able to benefit other people. This a present day issue which may challenge the readers views on alternative solutions to medical issues and their views on the value of human life and the importance of identity. At the start of ‘My Sisters Keeper’ Anna’s prologue sets the tone of the novel. She says ‘In my first memory, I am three years old and I am trying to kill my sister.’ This may provide the readers with a subtle hint of what is going to happen. It reveals her honesty even at such a young age with her desire to have her own identity. This continues with ‘As we got older, I didn’t seem to exist, except in relation to her.’ However in ‘Never Let Me Go’ the readers are instantly introduced into Kathy’s. She talks about working and so the readers believe she has a job as a career for people who are donors, yet they don’t know that she is also a donor so the readers will perceive her as a normal person. Also within the first chapter of ‘Never Let Me Go’ Kathy talks about herself, Tommy and Ruth who are her closest friends throughout the book. Ishiguro introduces the characters with strong personalities, as is shown through Tommy’s expressive release of his anger, ‘He began to scream and shout’ and ‘he was raving, flinging his limbs about, at the sky, at the wind’. The Doctrine Of Double Effect The Doctrine of Double Effect The principle of double effect also called the doctrine of double effect normally applied in the medicine, palliative care and war fields is always invoked in order to explain the permission to carry out an action that can cause serious harm. The harm in this case may include the death in human beings as a result of the side effects otherwise with the aim of promoting some good. This doctrine affirms that at times it may be permissible to cause harm as side effect to arrive at a desirable result. However it becomes necessary to understand that it is not permissible to cause such harm so as to arrive at the same good end Thomas Aquinas coined this principle during his discussion of the permissibility of self defense. Aquinas observed that nothing hinders one act from having two effects only one of which is intended whereas the other is besides the intention. There are four conditions tied to the application of this principle: The act must be morally good or else indifferent. In other words the good result should be achievable apart from the bad one The good effect must be derived from the action immediately just as the bad effect. This implies that the desirable or good effect is produced directly by the action not by the bad effect. The good effect should be proved sufficiently desirable as compensation for allowing the bad effect The agent who in this case may be the practitioner of the principle should not positively will the bad effect but may permit it. The good effect in this case of the vaccine example is to save lives and is not as a result of the evil effect the fatalities resulting from the vaccines side effects. An appropriate answer that can be backed by this principle of double effect would reveal an intrinsic intentionality of the moral act. Dr. Taboada further points out that ethical experiences are determined by the moral species of the act which in essence is the kind of act we perform. Therefore the intrinsic intentionality of the act itself and the intention of the agent are not the same thing as elaborated by Dr. Taboada and hence they must be carefully distinguished. Further still ethical character of our actions do not primarily depend on motivation or intention of the agent as such but on the moral species of the action performed. Thus the principle of double effect intends to secure this distinction as a necessary condition for ethical legitimacy to be established and our actions respected. Therefore in carrying out actions that can easily invoke a moral debate it is necessary to clearly understand the doctrine of double effect and legitimize each of these actions based on the conditions that have suggested by Michael Walzer. Revernd Parris sends for Reverand Hale, an expert of witchcraft. Elizabeth urges John to denounce Abigail as a fraud. Mary Warren, returns from Salem with the news that Elizabeth has been charges with witch craft. Giles Correy and Francis Nurse arrest Elizabeth. John Proctor forces Mary Warren to testify that the girls are lying. Elizabeth is spared for time because she is pregnant. John Proctor convinces Danforth to allow Mary Warren to testify and Mary tells the court the girls are lying. When the group of girls are brought in the accuse Mary of bewitching them. John Proctor confesses his afair with Abigail Williams and accuses her of being motivated by the jealousy of his wife. Danforth asks Elizabeth if her husband has been unfaithful to her, but says he hasnt to spare her husbands name. She did not know John had already confessed. Reverand Parris is an egolistic man that was more concerned with his reputation than the sickness of his child. He has made many changes to his church that are to the peoples dismay. He was strongly disliked for straying away from the ways of the Puritan Church, such as placing gold within the church and wanting to own the house that the church had provided for him. John Proctor, the protagonist in this play as well as a target of Reverand Parris, is another important character. Mr. Proctor is a man in his thirties, and is seems unlike the other men in the town. He had a brief afair with Abigain, and is making it his duty to stop the witch hunt that he and his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, have found themselve caught up in. He realizes the corruption of the outbreak and tries to protect the lives of innocent people. Themes Many themes are portrayed in this pay. One of them is lie and deciet. Most, if not all of the characters are lying in some way. If not to other people, then to themselves. Along with, Respect and Reputation, the social status in the town is tied to ones ability to substain the unspoken religious rules. A good name is the only way you will survive, such as getting people to do buissiness with you or even getting a fair hearing in court, however reputation means nothing when it comes to witch craft. Another theme is Good and Evil. The village bases their belief system between good vs evil, or god vs satan. The play is divided into two camps, but nobody truly understands which side is good, and which side is bad. Then of course, theres the theme of jealousy. However, the main theme is fear. Fear of the devil allows the witch trials to proceed, fear of death causes people to lie and say theyre witches, and the fear of lying causes inocent people to die. You were accused of witchcraft simply because of jealousy, and were cheated on but still managed to help your husband when he was in need. The way you carried yourself even though you were accused of something you hadnt actually done is really amazing. You stayed true to who you are and didnt break down like many of the others that had been accused did. When the court asked you to step in and convince John to confess, even though you knew he didnt, you helped him decide what was best to do for not only yourself, but for him aswell.

The Machines of Death Are Dying Capital punishment is, by definition, punishing a crime with death. The death penalty has been used periodically throughout American history since 1608, when the first recorded death sentence was imposed. According to "Executions in the U.S.: The Espy File," by M. Walt Espy and John Ortiz Smylka, there was a gradual incline in the number of executions from that time and throughout the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, peaking at 200 executions per year in the mid-1930s. There was a subsequent decline in imposition, followed by a moratorium, which ended in 1976 (1). The moratorium was initiated in the 1972 case Furman v. Georgia, when the Supreme Court declared that the death penalty had been applied arbitrarily and used unfairly against the poor and African American. Capital punishment was called, "excessive, unnecessary, offensive to contemporary values" by Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall (3). The death penalty was reinstated in 1976 when guided discretion statutes in Georgia, Texas, and Florida were deemed constitutional by the Supreme Court. The Court also deemed the death penalty constitutional under the Eighth Amendment, which states, "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishment inflicted." The question, then, is whether or not capital punishment can really be cleared of the identification as being cruel and unusual. The basis of the American judicial system has long been said to be the need to find fair forms of retribution for crimes. The worst of those crimes is generally considered to be the intentional mur... ...dollars since the moratorium ended in 1976 (1). The death penalty is one instance in which the costs definitely outweigh the benefits. As it stands, the death penalty should no longer be used in America because it is riddled with imperfections in so many ways. Capital punishment does not serve as an effective incapacitator or deterrent to criminal behavior. It is an inhumane and costly procedure that dehumanizes American culture. As a nation that practices this flawed form of discipline we are isolated from our Western culture counterparts, and the fact that we continue this practice reduces America's credibility as a global leader. In order to place the American judicial system - and culture as a whole - where it belongs on all levels, the system of capital punishment must be abolished.
